When does the day begin? – Reply

Recently someone shared with me several quotes from Ellen White about not rejecting new light. And when does the day begin they were saying that the Passover day began in the morning at sunrise, rather than sunset. I’ve heard this teaching before from many who are accepting the lunar Sabbath teachings, and I thought I would post a short reply. This is a brief answer using actual quotes from the writings of sister White.

Regarding the Passover “DAY” and the Spirit of Prophecy. Here are some clear quotes on the issue of when the Passover day is.

“These types were fulfilled, not only as to the event, but as to the time. On the fourteenth day of the first Jewish month, the very day and month on which for fifteen long centuries the Passover lamb had been slain, “Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, p. 399.

Jesus was crucified on the Passover day, the 14th day. What we need to know is did the 14th day start in the morning, or the night before? In the study shared we were told that the Passover day begins in the morning and continues to the next morning. Some quotes are used from sister Ellen White to prove this. But what does sister White say regarding this day when Jesus was crucified? Did it begin in the morning?

First I would assume we agree on the events that happened the night he was captured happening Thursday night. Jesus ate the Passover with his disciples that night. (John 13-17) Then he was captured after the Passover meal,(John 18) and crucified on Friday afternoon, which would be the 14th DAY as we read above. What day did they gather to eat the Passover according to sister Whtie?

“They had gathered to celebrate the Passover. The Saviour desired to keep this feast alone with the twelve. He knew that His hour was come; He Himself was the true paschal lamb, and ON THE DAY the Passover was eaten He was to be sacrificed” Ellen G. White, Desire of Ages, p. 642.

If Jesus ate the Passover on the same day he was sacrificed, then we can quite simply conclude that the 14th day began the night before and not in the morning.

So the 14th is like this:

14th after sundown = Thursday night = “the Passover was eaten”
14th daylight = Friday afternoon = “He was sacrificed”

Then he was taken off the cross before sundown, when the Sabbath began. As she said “ON THE DAY the Passover was eaten He was to be sacrificed”. Therefore we must understand that the 6th day started Thursday evening when they ate the Passover meal. And in conclusion the Sabbath started at sundown Friday night, and ended the next sundown on Saturday night.

Gen_1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Lev 23:32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

Hope that helps. God bless.
